Questions & answers
Before you decide
Honest answers to the questions men ask most. If yours isn’t here, ask us directly.
All questions
Is there any specific criteria I need to meet to participate? Do I need prior experience?
No. No previous retreat or inner-work experience is required. All we ask is that you come with an open heart and mind, ready to be honest, open up, and connect.
We do ask that you not be in active crisis when you arrive. If you are going through something recent and raw, please get professional support in place first; this retreat can be part of your path, but it is not equipped to be your only support in an emergency.
How do I know if this is the right fit for me?
It’s a good fit if you’re willing to be honest even when it’s uncomfortable, and open to connecting with other men in a real way. Our retreats give you a chance to look at your life with fresh eyes. That means being okay with a mix of structure (group sessions, ceremony) and private reflection time.
It’s probably not the right time if you’re looking for a purely relaxing getaway with no self-reflection involved, or if you’re not willing to engage with the group at all.
Can I come alone?
Yes, absolutely. Most men do. If you’re coming with a friend and would like to room together, just let us know.
What’s provided?
Everything you need for daily living is provided: towels, bedding, soap, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner, just as you’d expect from any hotel room, plus a small coffee maker in each room. All meals, food, and snacks are taken care of.
Are there any dietary accommodations?
Let us know about any allergies or dietary restrictions before you register, and we’ll do our best to accommodate them.
What’s allowed, and what’s not?
Not allowed: mind-altering substances (tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, psilocybin, etc.), anything illegal, firearms or weapons, and pets.
Otherwise, anything that supports your stay is welcome. We especially invite you to bring a water bottle, a journal and pen, and any items you’d like to add to the altar.
This sounds intense. How do I know if I can handle it?
Our retreats build in an on-ramp rather than throwing you into the deep end. Our facilitators read the room and won’t push anyone past what they can handle on day one. We work to create enough trust for your body to actually relax, perhaps enough to feel something for the first time in years.
A few things worth knowing: participation is invited, never forced. You can opt out of any specific activity that doesn’t feel right in the moment. There’s downtime built in, so it’s not wall-to-wall intensity.
If you still have questions about whether you can participate fully, reach out through the contact page and we’ll set up a conversation first.
Do I have to share and be vulnerable, or can I just observe?
The retreat is built around all of us getting to know each other and ourselves on a deeper level, which does require some sharing and vulnerability. How much you share is ultimately up to you. It’s normal for some men to take a little time to warm up, but we don’t expect anyone to purely observe the whole weekend.
Is what I share confidential?
Confidentiality is one of our core principles. What’s shared in the container stays in the container. You’re always welcome to share your own story and your own breakthroughs afterward, but not anyone else’s.
What’s a typical day like?
Every retreat, and every day within it, takes its own shape depending on the group and what’s moving through it, so there’s no fixed schedule we can hand you in advance.
That said, most days include some combination of morning movement or meditation, group sharing sessions, personal reflection time, meals together, and time in nature. Some days lean more structured, others leave more room to breathe. Part of what makes this work is staying responsive to what the group actually needs, rather than running everyone through an identical script.
I’ve never done anything like this before. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Most men who come haven’t. What matters more than experience is willingness.
What if I’ve never opened up to other men before?
That’s exactly what the container is built for. Our principles of confidentiality, no fixing, no judgment, and full authority over your own boundaries exist to make it possible to go somewhere you’ve never gone with other men before.
What’s the refund policy?
Life happens, and plans change. Our cancellation policy is tiered by how far ahead of the retreat you cancel:
60 or more days before the retreat: full refund. 30 to 59 days before: 70% of your booking fee is refundable. Less than 30 days before: your booking fee is non-refundable, but not lost; you may roll your full payment into credit toward a future Brotherhood of the Heart retreat, valid for 12 months.
Because our retreats are small and intimate by design, a single cancellation is felt by the whole group. These options exist so a change in your plans doesn’t have to mean losing what you’ve already invested, while still protecting the container for the men who are ready to show up.
What are my payment options?
Pay in full: cover your ticket and room together at registration and save $100 on the total.
Pay in installments: reserve your place with your ticket, then split your room payment into two installments, the first due 90 days before the retreat and the second due 30 days before.
